ATCO Electric operates the existing 4.72‑megawatt power plant at Fort Chipewyan. The current approval from Alberta Environment will expire in October 2008. ATCO Electric applied to Environment June 16, 2008 to renew the approval by October. The existing plant is scheduled to be shut down and removed in 2009, but the plant still needs a valid Environment approval to run in the meantime and for site reclamation which is planned for completion in 2010. |

ATCO Electric is
replacing the
existing 4.77 MW
power plant at Fort
Chipewyan, Alberta,
with a new plant
(approx. 4.58 MW).
The new plant with
controls to prevent
releases will be
located on a new
site, to allow the
removal of the
existing plant and
remediation of
contaminated soil at
the existing site. Following consultations with the community over a two year span, ATCO Electric submitted an application to Alberta Environment in July 2007 and to the EUB September 2007. Site development started January 25, 2008, upon receipt of approvals. Construction is planned to continue through 2009. ATCO Electric is submitting an amendment application to Alberta Environment (July 2008) to reflect some minor site and equipment adjustments. |
