ATCO Electric is committed to encouraging innovative options for efficiently and reliably delivering energy to our customers. At the same time, as good corporate citizens and stewards of the environment, we look to ensure these options are environmentally responsible and, if possible, can reduce the impact of our operations.

One way that Albertans can now reduce their environmental impact is through the use of micro generation units. Micro generation units are less than 1 MW in size and produce electricity using renewable, environmentally friendly fuel sources such as solar panels, small-scale hydro, wind, biomass, or fuel cells. Some generating units with greenhouse intensity of less than 418 kg/MWh may also qualify for the micro generation designation.

New regulations have been passed in Alberta to help the development of micro generation effective January 1, 2009. As of July 1, 2008, ATCO Electric has begun accepting applications from customers to interconnect micro generation units.

Steps to implementing Micro Generation:

  1. Become familiar with the contents of the Micro Generation Handbook which will help in understanding the process and technical requirements of interconnecting your micro generation unit to ATCO Electric’s distribution system
  1. When you are ready to proceed with your installation, complete the micro-generation application form.

Note -  Missing or incomplete information on the Micro Generation application form will cause delays in providing service.

  2. Mail the application form with all the required documents to ATCO Electric's Edmonton or Calgary office.
