Central East Transmission Development Overview

Overview

The proposed Central East Transmission Development project is within a large area stemming from Cold Lake south through the Battle River, Wainwright and Vegreville areas, and east to the Provost area (see Overview[AB1] ). Within this area, a variety of system upgrades have been proposed to meet growing demand for electricity from oil sands development and pipelines, and to interconnect proposed gas fired electricity generation as well as wind farms in the region. The upgrades include adding new transmission lines; adding new substations; adding new telecommunication towers; upgrading existing substations; and salvaging existing transmission lines and equipment.

Specific upgrades include:

  • Constructing approximately 195 kilometres of new transmission line
  • Salvaging approximately 95 kilometres of existing transmission line
  • Constructing two new substations
  • Modifying 12 existing substations
  • Constructing six new telecommunication towers
