Plug into ATCO Electric
ATCO Electric, working in close association with teachers throughout our service area,
has developed free*, quality electricity educational materials for use with students from
grades four to six.
The Edison Electrical Institute has recognized these fun, activity-based lessons with
an international award for outstanding electricity education programs. The materials have
an Alberta focus and teachers call them motivating and exciting.
Powerful teaching tools - Description of curriculum
Electricity is a major unit in the Division II curriculum, so we developed a kit with
activities for grades four to six on topics such as electrical safety, wise use of energy,
electricity production and environmental issues.
ATCO Electrics Teaching Power materials include a variety of educational
exercises and activities. There are three units: Power Safe, Power Wise and Power Source.
Each unit contains a teachers guide, student activities and an educational poster.
The chart on the back of this brochure shows how these materials fit into the Alberta
curriculum.
1) Power Safe
Estimated teaching time: 6-8 class periods.
This unit contains four activities to teach students how to avoid an electrical emergency.
The kit includes a home safety audit so students can recognize potential electrical
hazards and determine solutions.
2) Power Wise
Estimated teaching time: 6-8 class periods.
Four activities in this unit teach students three important reasons to conserve
electricity: to save money, to preserve non-renewable resources and to reduce impact on
the environment.
3) Power Source
Estimated teaching time: 10-12 class periods.
This unit explains how electricity is generated and distributed to Alberta communities and
homes. The seven activities include instructions on how to build electric circuits, and a
current detector.
